Activist and human rights defender Sonia Pierre will be laid to rest today in her native Villa Altagracia, San Cristobal, where she died on Sunday at the age of 48. She suffered a massive heart attack.

The funeral service is set for 3pm at the municipal cemetery, but before that her body will be taken to the old cane workers' settlement of La Lecheria, where she was born and where she died. The body of the defender of citizens, especially of Haitian ancestry, will be transferred at 9am today from the Altagracia Funeral Home in the National District where it was first taken, to Villa Altagracia. Yesterday, although in smaller numbers than the day before, people continued to visit the funeral home to pay tribute. Some of the people who went to give their condolences to the family said that her death at a relatively young age was a particularly sad loss.

Leftist leader Narciso Isa Conde stated that the activist had died firm in her beliefs, despite the poor treatment as well as the mockery to which she was often subjected. "This type of person is always valued after their death," commented Isa Conde.

Rafael (Fafa) Taveras, a member of the PRD, stressed the bravery and courage and the interest that Pierre had for defending human rights and that she (Sonia) had to open her own road in society in order to have that success. He said that Pierre did not work for her own personal motives, but had taken on the pain of many citizens of Haitian origin who were born in the country but who were rejected. During yesterday's Chamber of Deputies session, legislator Julio Encarnacion asked for a minute's silence in Sonia Pierre's memory.
