National Statistics Office (ONE) director Pablo Tactuk has announced that ONE would be carrying out the First National Survey of Immigrants next June. ONE, a dependency of the Ministry of Economy, Planning and Development, will conduct the survey with European Union funding and technical support from the United Nations Population Fund.
Minister Temistocles Montas, European Union ambassador Irene Horejs, UNPF representative Sonia Vasquez and consultant Alicia Maguid were all present when the announcement was made at the Presidential Palace yesterday. Montas said that the survey would cost over a million dollars. One of the main objectives of the survey is to collect information about the documented or non-resident foreign population, categorize their socio-demographic attributes and estimate their economic contribution, especially the Haitian population because it is so large and the estimates are so broad as to not allow for any confidence in the existing data when it comes to taking decisions.
