As statisticians continue to process the results of last year's ENHOGAR survey, new and sometimes troubling results are emerging. Today's El Nuevo Diario reports that 15.5% of children between the ages of 5 and 17 are engaged in work of some sort. The good news is that this figure is 14% lower than in the 2000 survey. Also encouraging is the fact that over 95% of birthing mothers had been seen by a doctor in a health center. The annual survey also showed that 73% of women between the ages of 15 and 49 were using contraceptives, an increase of 11% over previous surveys. The ENHOGAR surveys are carried out once a year by the National Statistics Office (ONE), which collects information from households on social, economic, demographic and environmental issues.
