The Industrial Association of the Dominican Republic (AIRD) believes that the electricity distributors should be privatized. El Caribe reports that AIRD vice president Circe Almanzar was backed by the Association of Industries of Herrera and the Province of Santo Domingo (AEIH) whose president Wadi Cano Acra said that all they wanted was efficient electric energy at a "competitive price." Almanzar and Cano were interviewed by El Caribe about a report published the day before, which showed that when the state took over the electricity distribution, it was saddled with the worst part, which is the distribution, where there is and was a large deficit. The 1997 law, which broke up the old CDE, created divisions of generation, distribution, transmission and hydroelectric generation. Almanzar said that she is in agreement with CDEEE head Celso Marranzini, in that there is a need for resources to provide consumers with electricity meters in order to strengthen the culture of paying for electricity use and to reduce the losses in distribution.
