The Civil Defense has suspended search and rescue operations for nine missing persons due to rough seas. They were in a boat that capsized while attempting an illegal trip to Puerto Rico along with 86 other people. So far, 83 have been accounted for and three are known to have drowned. Civil Defense director in Nagua, Minerva Santos, told Diario Libre reporters that the search for the survivors would resume when the sea conditions improve.
She said that many of the people who reached Puerto Rico on another boat that rescued them after their boat capsized are calling their relatives to calm them down. "Only three people from the community of Frenito de Nagua, one from El Aguacate de Yuna and another from San Pedro de Macoris, have not communicated with their loved ones," Santos said. She said that the seas were still very rough which makes it impossible for the Civil Defense to search for the people still missing, while the Dominican Navy search continues. Frank Soto, the Deputy Attorney General of the Republic, said that he has been appointed to chair the commission that is investigating the case. The commission also includes the prosecutor of the Appeals Court in San Francisco de Macoris, Jose Amado Rosa and the District Attorney of Nagua, Agustina Castillo. These officials are interviewing the relatives of the victims of the shipwreck. They will also be interviewing all of the members of the naval personnel stationed at the Playa de los Gringos in Matancitas in the municipality of Nagua.
