Several traders in Tamboril, Licey al Medio, Santiago and other cities have been tricked with US$50, RD$200, and RD$500 counterfeit bills that have been circulating for the last few days in the province.
One victim was Miguel Sanchez, who received a fake RD$500 bill in his colmado in the Cienfuegos sector. National Police Cibao Regional Command spokesman Colonel Lorenzo Morillo Plagio, reported that three people who trafficked in false currency in Santiago were arrested in their SUV after attempting to pass US$50 bills to other traders in Tamboril. In this case, Miguel Angel Valerio Lugo, Alexander de Jesus Martinez Ventura and Eddy Hernandez Henriquez were arrested and were found to be carrying five counterfeit fifty-dollar bills. They tried to evade persecution by the Police in a 2000 Toyota RAV4 SUV by driving backwards, but they hit a parked vehicle. The police agents had to fire two shots at the vehicle, hitting it in the front, but nobody was injured.
A police patrol from the Preventive Police arrested Miguel Gernonimo Jimenez, 42, when he tried to change a false check in a bank in Santiago for the amount of RD$58,000. The check was written on the account of Julio Martinez and/or Alejandrina Arellano. When the files were checked at the National Police, Geronimo Jimenez, who was shown to have a criminal background, will be held for trial.
