In a massive display of remorse and support, hundreds of mourners followed the funeral cortege carrying the remains of Sonia Pierre to her final resting place in the municipal cemetery of Villa Altagracia. Pierre, an internationally known defender of human rights, especially the rights of children of Haitian immigrants in the Dominican Republic, died after suffering a massive heart attack in her home last Sunday. Senators from Haiti and the Haitian ambassador, Fritz Cineas were present at the graveside as the activist was laid to rest.
