The Dominican Naval authorities have arrested agents stationed at four of their posts on suspicion of collusion with the organizers of an ill-fated illegal boat trip to Puerto Rico.
The men are being held at the Navy headquarters in Sans Souci. Naval Chief vice admiral Nicolas Cabrera Arias ordered their arrest in connection with the incident in which several people were drowned when their boat struck a reef off the north east coast on Sunday.
The authorities said that initial reports of 95 passengers were untrue, as the boat only had the capacity for transporting between 30 and 35 people. Three are confirmed to have drowned, while several others are reported to have reached Puerto Rico after being rescued by another vessel making an illegal crossing.
