Two items about Dominican baseball players made the news today. The first is that "Leo Nunez" - who is really Juan Carlos Oviedo - has been arrested and will be arraigned to stand trial this morning. According to a Twitter note by National Police spokesman Maximo Baez Aybar, the young man has to face charges of forging documents, including alterations to birth certificates. Central Electoral Board (JCE) head Roberto Rosario had originally said that he would not bring charges against the ball player.

Much better news is the surprising signing of Albert Pujols, the best player in Major League Baseball, with the Los Angeles Angels for the tidy sum of US$254,000,000 for the next ten years. This news caught the baseball world by surprise and all of the commentators were nearly at a loss for words. Pujols was a free agent and St. Louis, where he came up to the Big Leagues, had stuttered and stammered while there was an opportunity to extend his contract. Their offer in April was perhaps US$70 million less than the offer from the Angels. The new deal is a guaranteed, no cut, no trade contract for ten years. This is the second highest contract in the history of baseball. Pujols won two World Series, was the Most Valuable Player several times and has posted impressive numbers unprecedented in the history of the game.
