Prior to the construction of a hotel and several villas, investors at Playa Grande were generous enough to fund excavations by the Dominican Museum of Man in the area. Experts from the museum, led by well-known anthropologist Abelardo Jimenez Lambertus and Spanish archeologist Adolfo Lopez, the museum has carried out excavations that established the presence of Taino Indians in the area over 500 years ago. One of the most interesting discoveries at the site is the fact that ceramic remains of different types were found, dating from 100 to 800 AD. Another interesting aspect is the fact that some European ceramics were found along with Mayan amulets, which could be explained by the fact that at least 15 ships were wrecked off the shores of Playa Grande, and one of them, in 1553, might have had direct contact with the Tainos of the area.
