Drivers from several public transport unions in Santo Domingo and across the country are threatening to dampen the Christmas spirit with fare hikes if their subsidies are not doubled. They want twice the subsidized fuel that the government is currently providing, but the Technical Ground Transport Office (OTTT) says that this is an unreasonable demand. Antonio Marte from Conatra, Blas Peralta of Fenatrado, and the Fenatrano union have all announced fare increases on their routes. According to El Nuevo Diario, the increases could be as high as RD$40 on some of the longer routes to the provinces.

OTTT head Julio Horton said that although he thinks that an increase in bus and car fares is unreasonable, he would take the request to the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and ensure that it reaches the President. He noted that fuel prices have remained stable for the past few weeks, which made the drivers' demand all the more unreasonable. Vice President Rafael Alburquerque and the head of the CNTU union, Ramon Perez Figueroa, are opposed to the demands.
