A load of 128 "bricks" of cocaine has been seized at the Las Americas International Airport (AILA) from a container that was going to be sent to Brussels, Belgium. The National Drug Control Department (DNCD) reported this latest seizure yesterday. The drugs, weighing some 130 kilograms, were discovered in the double lining of the roof in a container parked in the cargo area. The cocaine was due to be shipped to Brussels today. The container belongs to the Unit-Pool Company.

According to DNCD spokesman Roberto Lebron, several people are under arrest in connection with this case. Jose Valera, Samuel Mata, Miguel Andino, Ricardo Marquez and Leonardo Duran are being held at DNCD headquarters where they will be interrogated. The DNCD investigators said that they were trying to establish whether an employee of the company that owns the container might be linked to the case. Lebron noted that DNCD commander Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo and Specialized Corps of Airport Security (CESA) director General Zenon Padilla Alcantara were present as the packages of cocaine were seized. Also present during the seizure were deputy prosecutors Nelson Beltre, Florentino Sanchez and Verny Troncoso, who are in charge of the investigations that will lead to an arraignment.
