Speaking in Santiago yesterday, President Leonel Fernandez said that the incidence of violence and crime has been notably reduced in the province over the last four months. Fernandez said that the city of Santiago feels safer today, thanks to the efforts of the state law enforcement agencies.

The President said that the reduction in the crime rate is due to increased cooperation between the Armed Forces, the National Police, the National Drug Control Department, the intelligence services and the Justice Department. He declared that there has also been increased cooperation between the Police and civil society and community leaders in the barrios of Santiago. "This has created increased trust and has led to greater security," he said. The President said that the vehicles and communications equipment delivered to the Police in Santiago had also contributed to the reduction of crime and violence in the province.

The President announced that at the end of December, the number of recruits and transfers from the Armed Forces on patrol to reinforce the Police would go up to 6,000. Fernandez said that he would return to Santiago in February to assess progress. President Fernandez was speaking at the provincial Governor's Office, after taking part in a second meeting with 31 community representatives of the Barrio Seguro Program in Santiago, in order to evaluate the application of the policies aimed at ensuring the safety of citizens in Santiago and throughout the Cibao region.
