Fernandez warns of misuse of media

President Leonel Fernandez attended the launch of the second edition of his book "The Crime of Public Opinion: Censorship, ideology, and Freedom of Expression" at the PUCMM University Theater in Santiago last night. The second edition was presented by Adriano Miguel Tejada and Flavio Dario Espinal, two outstanding jurists and scholars who provided the audience with their analysis of the crime of opinion, their definition of truthful information and a forecast of the challenges posed by the electronic media and social networks. The President highlighted the fact that risk assessors are often in collusion with print or televised media and can bring down governments. He said that he is in favor of penalizing crimes in cases of defamation or slander since to not penalize or to remove the penalties for these crimes, as some people wish to do, would lead to chaos and allow unscrupulous people to play with a person's moral standing.
