La Vega jail goes up for RD$280m

The government is going to spend RD$280 million to build a new model jail and rehabilitation facility for close to 1000 inmates in La Vega. According to Diario Libre, Attorney General Radhames Jimenez Pena, was inspecting the site yesterday and announced the construction project which should begin in May, 2012. Jimenez Pena toured the building site in El Pino, in the Ponton sector of La Vega, accompanied by television commentator Julio Hazim. The project will have five four-story cellblocks surrounding a central recreation area and small market. The prison will have 10 isolation cells and 10 maximum-security cells with internal control. In another part of the program, the inmates will be trained in woodworking, upholstery, painting and sewing.
