Ancel Schecker, the long-serving director of testing at the Ministry of Education, reported yesterday that only 38% of more than 16,000 fourth grade students who were tested were able to pass the standardized examinations. The director of Evaluation and Educational Quality Control at the ministry also reported that girls showed better performance than boys, and children over their grade age or engaged in child labor achieved worse results, which seems to indicate a problem of repetition. Schecker said that schools that showed the best scores tended to have the most hours of classes, didactic resources and a healthy school atmosphere combined with economic factors and family conditions.

The Spanish Language and Mathematics tests were applied with assistance from the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (INTEC). Because of the results the Ministry of Education told El Nuevo Diario reporters that it had embarked on a policy of intervention in these schools in order to support primary school teachers. The services of the Pontifical Catholic University Madre y Maestra (PUCMM), the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture, and the Poveda Center were contracted to work on training teachers in order to obtain improved educational results in primary schools with more than 500 students.
