President Leonel Fernandez said yesterday that the Santo Domingo Metro has become a blueprint project for other countries in Latin America and a source of pride for Dominicans. He reiterated that next 27 February he would take a "ride" through several of the second line stations. He spoke to reporters at the end of a tour around the new Metro transfer station, located at the intersection of John F. Kennedy and Maximo Gomez avenues.
President Fernandez said he was "greatly impressed and awed" by the project, because it is like being in a first world country. Fernandez arrived at the station at the Centro de los Heroes with several officials and got on the second car of the train, which made its normal stops with Fernandez on board, as far as the Juan Bosch Station, where he went to the front car until the Juan Pablo Duarte station, from where he went to inspect the three levels of the new station, which is now finished.
"To have an engineering project of this quality and conditions is really exceptional," said Fernandez. The President congratulated engineer Diandino Pena and the team that has worked with him for several years in order to make the Santo Domingo Metro a point of reference for other countries of Latin America. "They have come from Guatemala, Panama and Colombia in order to find out how we have implemented a project of this category in this country in order to replicate it in their respective nations".
