The PLD, headed by its president, Leonel Fernandez, will begin the distribution of Christmas boxes this Sunday, continuing a tradition that stretches back decades. El Nuevo Diario and other papers said that the government would spend RD$1.3 billion on the boxes, toys and some appliances for Christmas distribution. The announcement came from the head of the Presidential Social Plan, Emigdio Sosa, who said that the President would distribute over 1,170,000 boxes and reach over 5,000,000 Dominicans. The boxes contain traditional holiday fare: rice, beans, pastas, pigeon peas, eggnog, wine, rum, chicken and other items. On Sunday the President will be in the south, in Elias Pina, San Juan de la Maguana, Barahona, Azua, Peravia and San Cristobal. On Monday he will visit the central region around Maria Trinidad Sanchez, San Francisco de Macoris, La Vega and Bonao. On Wednesday he will distribute boxes in Greater Santo Domingo and on Thursday he will head to the east. On Friday he will be in Mao, Dajabon, Montecristi and Santiago where he will dine with a family.
