Smoke from Rafey affects Santiago

The wind changed direction yesterday and the normal smoke and haze from the fires burning in the Rafey garbage landfill site blew towards the city of Santiago. Neighborhood groups from La Gloria, San Lorenzo, Cienfuegos, and Cuesta Colorado complained that around 6:30 in the evening the haze from the landfill was causing breathing problems and the air smelled bad. Irving Vargas, the municipal secretary for city cleanup, said that the smoke comes from fires set by the people who search through the refuse. They lit fires as part of their demand for the access road to be repaired. The road became almost impassable after the recent rains and the scavengers complain that they are not able to make a living without the trucks reaching the center of the landfill.
