Ruling party presidential candidate Danilo Medina spoke out yesterday in favor of the government meeting the 4% of GDP budgetary requirement for education. He said that crime would only be reduced if education quality in public schools is improved and people's purchasing power increases. He reiterated that he would fulfill his campaign promise of investing 4% of GDP in the educational sector as of 2013. Elections are scheduled for May 2012, and the next President will take office in August 2012.
Medina said the money would be used to improve public school teachers' wages to encourage better talents to study education in the universities. "We propose to make changes in the education system to increase the average time in school from eight to 12 years and to train a new generation of high school graduates who are able to enter the workforce, which is becoming increasingly competitive and demanding," said the candidate. "If we do not improve education in the schools and create the conditions for our young people to enter the productive world, then social peace in the Dominican Republic will be a chimera," he said. He said that 68% of the economically active population has a monthly income under RD$10,000.
He was speaking during a gala dinner held in his honor in San Francisco de Macoris, coordinated by Juan Octavio Ceballos, a former minister of public health, with the attendance of PLD senator Amilcar Romero, deputies Juan Compres, Juan Jose Rosario and Lupe Nunez, provincial governor Luz Selene Plata and community leaders, as reported in acento.com.do
