At least 22 people, including the entire National Drug Control Department, Airport Security Corps (CESA) and Migration staff at the La Romana International Airport are under arrest in connection with a cocaine haul seized at the airport on Thursday before dawn. Two US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) agents participated in the operation. The 1,000-kilos cocaine cargo was bound for Antwerp's Deurne Airport in Belgium transported in a twin-engine airplane departing from La Romana airport. The authorities named Nicolas Joannes Maria of the Netherlands and Edgard Rowson of Great Britain and Dominican air force captain Humberto Percival Pena de Marchena as suspects in the case. The drug seizure took place at 4am, and the shipment of 1,077 kilos was distributed in 20 suitcases.
El Dia reports it was an operation worthy of the movies. Shortly after 3am, an elite team from the National Drug Control Department, working in cooperation with agents of the DEA, left Santo Domingo and arrived at the La Romana international airport shortly before 4am. The order was to arrest all the DNCD staff on duty at the airport and disarm the military personnel assigned to the airport security corps (CESA) and Migration officers. Complicity is suspect.
