The Dominican Republic is hoping to benefit from cooperation with governments of the US and three European countries to implement a drug combating strategy in the Caribbean Corridor. The initiative is aimed at creating a naval blockade or maritime wall to counteract growing operations of the South American drug supply sources and North American drug demand, as reported in Hoy. The cartels are trying to increase their control of the Caribbean, now that anti-drug measures are making their operations more difficult in Mexico and Colombia. Hoy quotes a report in The Maritime Executive that mentions that the operation will use spy satellites, modern radars, and land and sea control units and high technology to fight crime.

Hoy reports that Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo, president of the National Drug Control Department, traveled to the US for coordination works. As reported in the publication, the Air Force, Navy and Army will work jointly with the DNCD as part of the new strategy that has the backing of governments in the US and Europe. As reported, the DR will play a key role in the operation due to its strategic geographic position and experience in combating drug trafficking. Despite efforts, the publication says that the DR continues to be one of the main options of the alternative drug routes that are being used more today due to the security enhancement in Mexico and Colombia.
