Last night, after several days off to take part in the All Star Game in Caracas Venezuela, the teams in the Dominican Winter Baseball League Championship, Dedicated to Papi Bisono (the full title of this year's championship) got underway once more.
In Santo Domingo, the Tigres del Licey received the Toros del Este, and thanks to the torrid batting of Juan Francisco, who hit a homerun and drove in four runs, they came away victorious, 6-3, in a game that almost guarantees them a spot in the next stage of the tournament. With a record of 24-20, the Tigres cannot be reached by any of the other teams below them in the standings, even if they end up winning all of their games.
In San Francisco de Macoris, the Gigantes del Cibao received the surging Leones del Escogido, who had won an amazing seven straight games going into the All Star break. In a 14-inning game, catcher Robinzon Diaz connected an RBI single to give the victory to the Gigantes at a little after 1am. For the Gigantes, Alexi Casilla, Robinzon Diaz and Pedro Feliz played major roles in the game, along with the good pitching by Aquilino Lopez and Erick Abreu who got the victory.
In San Pedro de Macoris, the Estrellas Orientales were celebrating their 101st birthday as a team, but unfortunately, the visiting Aguilas Cibaenas defeated them for the ninth straight time this season. Elian Herrera and Joaquin Arias, who extended his hitting streak to 21 games, were aided by Wilin Rosario and Hector Luna. Shane Youman delivered another quality start and Miguel Batista got his fifth save of the season.
