Drug control agents have been caught handling a shipment of 58 packages of cocaine in a private airplane bound for Puerto Rico. The operation was aborted at Las Americas International Airport and the two agents were arrested and accused of loading the small plane. The National Drug Control Department agents under arrest were identified as captain Vladimir Peralta Santos, agent Wilfredo Antonio Avila Vasquez and Salvador Gomez Feliz, an employee of aviation service company Servair. Members of the Specialized Airport Security Corps (CESA) and the assistant prosecutor for the Province of Santo Domingo Nelson Beltre participated in the confiscation of the drugs, as reported in El Dia.

Major General Rolando Rosado Mateo, who made the announcement on Sunday, said that the consignment was being loaded into an airplane belonging to Servair, which would have been piloted by Santos Seda Rodriguez, a US citizen, who was declared a fugitive of justice when he did not turn up to pilot the airplane. He is thought to have been tipped off about the confiscation of the drugs. As reported, one of the men under arrest had taken eight packs of cocaine, but they were recovered when he was arrested. An investigation into the identity of the true owner of the shipment is under way.
