Manuel Diez Cabral, the president of the National Business Council (CONEP), is arguing for an extension of the Stand-by arrangement with the International Monetary Fund and for the agency to be more flexible in its position so that a consensus can be reached. The business leader noted that even in these extreme circumstances the country has shown it is capable of meeting its international financial commitments.

Speaking to the press during a Christmas luncheon, Diez Cabral said that the IMF should accept that the Dominican Republic has given indications of fulfilling its commitments with the IMF and that both the agency and the government should reach a consensus in order to extend the stability that the agreement with the IMF has provided the country. Speaking to Listin reporter Candida Acosta, Diez Cabral said that the nation has to change its policy of taking on debt to stimulate the economy and work towards a new economic model that will emphasize exports in 2012.
