Judges release counterfeiters on bail

The judges of the First Chamber of the Court of Appeals, Julio Cano Alfau, Manuel Hernandez Victoria, Katia Miguelina Jimenez and Ziomicell Guzman released on a million pesos bail bond (RD$1,000,000) Felipe Javier Omar Achecar Concepcion, the accused head of a ring of document counterfeiters who worked in complicity with employees of the Central Electoral Board (JCE). The counterfeiting ring produced fake "cedulas" - the personal identification and voter registration cards held by all adult Dominicans - as well as other documents like birth certificates. El Nuevo Diario says that only Judge Cano Alfau voted against the bail bond. Together with the economic guarantee, the defendant was placed under travel restrictions and required to make periodic appearances before the prosecutor of the court. The charges against Achecar Concepcion include providing false "cedulas" and birth certificates for people facing drug or contract killing charges.
