The Dominican twins who were conjoined at birth and separated in an operation at the Children's Hospital of Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia with the backing of the World Pediatric Project on 7 November returned to Santo Domingo at 5pm yesterday and traveled to Boca Chica, where they live. Their father hadn't seen them since they left on 31 August. The babies were born in April 2010, joined at the abdomen and sharing several organs. They are the children of Lisania Santis and Marino Tapia, a 40-year old construction worker, and have three older brothers, ages 17, 10 and 4.
First Lady Margarita Cedeno, with tears in eyes, greeted the two-year olds, Maria and Teresa Tapia later in the evening with a dinner for children and teenagers from organizations backed by the Office of the First Lady served at the Green Room of the Presidential Palace. Cedeno is the PLD vice presidential candidate for the 20 May 2012 presidential election. "The return of the twins now separated is a blessing from God and a Christmas gift to the country," said the First Lady as reported in El Caribe.
Surgeon David Lanning led 15 physicians in a 20-hour operation on Maria and an 18.5-hour operation on Teresa.
