Former Senator Tonty Rutinel refused to leave jail at the Palace of Justice in Ciudad Nueva yesterday in protest at having allegedly been mistreated in jail. He was arrested and is awaiting trial on charges of abusing the mother of one of his children. A court in Santo Domingo authorized his release on a RD$10 million bail on Saturday, but Rutinel is now requesting to be visited at the jail by a commission of PRD members. Rutinel argued his case is political and says he will sue National District prosecutor Alejandro Moscoso Segarra for his alleged mistreatment while at the Palacio de la Justicia jail.

Rutinel was arrested on 14 December after charges filed by his long-time girlfriend Leidy Caraballo, according to the coordinator of complaints on Gender Violence for the National District, Aracelis Peralta, who was in charge of the interrogation. The woman received a cut on her face and required 12 stitches at a medical center. Reportedly, the couple has a 2-year, 8-month old child.
