The Ministry of Culture has awarded painter Ada Balcacer the 2011 National Visual Arts Award in recognition of the artist's 60-year career. The jury said it took into consideration her career in drawing, engraving, murals, cultural management, and her work as an art teacher in the Dominican Republic, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe and the United States. "She is a artistic personality of Caribbean dimensions, whose esthetic and theoretical proposals and the quality of her work make her an essential figure in the history of art in the Caribbean and Latin America," said the jury, upon announcing their decision.
Her works can be seen at the Centro Leon exhibition Wings & Roots: Ada Balcacer - Mastery and Audacity of an Exceptional Artist in Santiago. 67 of her works are on show from 17 November to 12 February at the temporary exhibition hall of the Santiago cultural center.
