Looks like it will be the Aguilas, Licey and Escogido in the Round Robin in January, to decide the playoffs of Dominican Professional Winter Baseball. Yesterday, the Aguilas defeated the Tigres del Licey 6-1 in Santo Domingo, with the performance of Major League pitchers Fausto Carmona and Ubaldo Jimenez.
The Aguilas Cibaenas defeat of the Tigres del Licey put the season series at 4-6, with the Tigres winning the season series. They are the only team to defeat the Aguilas, who reached 30 wins in their individual season series. Audry Ciriaco, 2-4 and 2 RBIs, Victor Mendez, 2-4, a homerun and 2 RBIs at the bat and Fausto Carmona, Angel Castro and Miguel Batista took care of the pitching duties against major leaguer Ubaldo Jimenez who only lasted 2 1/3 innings against the Aguilas.
In San Francisco de Macoris, the Gigantes kept alive their hopes for a play-off berth by defeating the Estrellas 8-5 in a tough game. The Gigantes took a 6-0 lead into the sixth inning when the Estrellas came back with 5 runs. Unfortunately, that was it for them. The victory gives the Gigantes a tie with the Toros del Este, who fell to the Leones del Escogido in La Romana. The Escogido defeated the Toros 3-1 in a game that was 1-1 in the 10th inning. Bryan Pena hit the two-run double that decided that game in La Romana.
As a result of last night's games, the Aguilas, Tigres and Escogido are in the Round Robin section of the playoffs, but tonight's games between the Gigantes and the Tigres and the Aguilas and the Toros will be decisive. With both the Toros and the Gigantes tied at 23-26, a victory of either team combined with a loss by the other gives that winning team the fourth spot. However, if the two teams, Toros and Gigantes should win their games tonight, there will be a one-game playoff to decide who goes to the Round Robin.
