The Emergency Operations Center (COE) reports that over the peak Christmas holiday (noon on Fri, 23 Dec n early morning on Mon, 26 Dec) the emergency services dealt with 561 cases, including 26 deaths, according to COE Bulletin No. 3. While more people received assistance this year, the number of deaths is 35% lower than last year, when 40 people were reported killed during the peak holiday season. COE director, Major General Juan Manuel Mendez said that of the 26 who died, 24 were involved in traffic accidents (13 were collisions involving motorcyclists) and two were victims of alcohol poisoning. He said that of the 561 reported cases, 236 involved traffic accidents, 20 involved alcohol poisoning and 13 cases of food poisoning. He reported that ten minors were treated for alcohol poisoning. The names of the parents were sent to the Prosecutor General office for prosecution. There were 330 traffic accidents, and 467 people were affected.

31% of the traffic accidents occurred between noon and 6pm and 26% between 12-midnight and 5am.

The provinces with the most incidents were Santo Domingo, National District, Santiago, San Cristobal, La Vega, Puerto Plata and San Pedro de Macoris.

Major General Juan Mendez urged not to drink and drive to avoid accidents.
