Well it happened. The 2011-2012 Winter Professional Baseball Championship will be played in the Cibao (Santiago and San Francisco de Macoris stadiums) and Santo Domingo. Last year's champions failed to make it into the top 4 for the round robin to decide the two for the playoffs.

The Gigantes del Cibao, winning their last two games of the 'regular' seasonothe initial 50-game stage of the championship - tied the once league-leading Toros del Este and in a one game playoff, in San Francisco de Macoris, defeated the defending champions 7-3. The game was an exciting one, with the Toros taking a 2-0 lead in the very first inning and then the Gigantes roared back with three runs in the bottom of the second inning, and so the game went, with threats by the Toros and heroic efforts by the pitchers for the Gigantes. Aquilino Lopez, who started for the Gigantes was rousted in the very first inning, replaced by Jose de Paula who was credited with the victory and he, in turn was followed by five more relief pitchers as the Toros tried to come from behind.

It was not so much that the Toros were not hitting. They were, with Esteban German, Pedro Ciriaco, Diory Hernandez, Andy Dirks, Wilkin Ramirez, all getting good hits. It was the fact that the Gigantes' pitchers were bending, but not breaking. And, of course, the Gigantes were hitting, with Alexi Casilla, Jimmy Paredes, Robinzon Diaz, moved up in the line-up because of his hot bat (2-3, homerun, RBI), Carlos Peguero (2-4, homerun, RBI) and Pedro Feliz (3-4, one homerun, 3 RBIs) all getting good at bats.

Now the tournament moves to the Round Robin portion of play, with each team playing the other three teams a total of six times, starting on 27 December with Escogido playing Licey in Santo Domingo and the Gigantes playing the Aguilas in Santiago. This portion of the tournament will end on January 17. Then the top two teams will play the Dominican versions of the World Series, which for local fans is certainly as intense as any series between the Yankees and the Red Sox.
