The COE (Emergency Operations Center) announced yesterday that the final toll for the Christmas weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) was 26 fatalities: 24 from traffic accidents and two from alcohol poisoning. Of the traffic fatalities, half involved motorcycle accidents. Even these gruesome numbers are an improvement of 35% over last year, when 40 people died. On the 24 and 25 December there were 330 traffic accidents, with 467 injured or affected, and 96 of who were motorcyclists, 70 from drunkenness, and 24 by food poisoning. Most of the accidents took place in the National District, the province of Santo Domingo, San Cristobal, Santiago, Puerto Plata, La Vega, San Pedro de Macoris, Azua and Barahona.

The COE is urging prudence to reduce the number of fatalities during the upcoming New Year's holiday. The COE announced that the second phase of the Christmas 2011-2012 Operation Eva begins on Friday, 30 December at noon and will end Sunday, 1 January at 8pm.
