The Collegiate Court of San Pedro de Macoris released four men yesterday, all well-known drug traffickers according to El Nuevo Diario. Prosecutor Henry Estevez de Leon said that he would appeal the decision of the Collegiate Tribunal of the Penal Chamber of the Court of the First Instance in San Pedro de Macoris. Apparently one of the first tasks of the new Supreme Court will be to evaluate the judges serving on the nation's courts. Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez called for the evaluation in his Christmas speech. Society in general shares the concern about the complacency of some of the judges in drug trafficking cases. The prosecutor criticized the release of four men who are accused of transporting 103 kilos of cocaine and who were facing sentences of up to 30 years in jail.
