Somehow, I think you've cracked it!

a mainly rural part of England with no large cities and not many big towns. Hence the locals, who are no doubt at least as sophisticated and well-educated as anybody else, have to suffer moronic jibes about their agricultural background. That explains "swede bashing". "Swede" here means a type of turnip (not someone from Sweden), not sure if you call them that in North America?



We call them Bama in the US, as in Alabama.
