Judicial Branch Council to review judges' performance

Judge Francisco Arias Valera says that it is the Council of the Judicial Branch, and not the Supreme Court of Justice that is the entity in charge of evaluating justices, as reported in Listin Diario on 28 December. Over the holidays, Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez said that the Supreme Court of Justice should make one of its first tasks an evaluation of the justices, especially those who have issued judgments without justification. The cardinal criticized the justices for being lenient with criminals. Arias Valera said that the justices would be evaluated in March, when the yearly evaluations are due. The Council of the Judicial Branch is made up of the president of the Supreme Court of Justice, a judge of that court, a judge of the Court of Appeals, judge Samuel Arias, a judge of first instance court, a justice of the Peace, Elias Santini and justice Francisco Arias Valera.
