The Emergency Operations Center (COE) reported 21 deaths over the New Year's holiday. Some 440 people had to be assisted, of whom 309 were in traffic accidents, 112 for alcohol poisoning and 19 for food poisoning, from midnight Friday 30 December to 8pm on Sunday, 1 January.
The Metropolitan Transport Authority reported 221 accidents, and in 108 of these, motorcycles were involved.
The CEO deployed a 32,345-strong staff during the operation that began on midnight on Friday, 30 December and was extended to evening of 1 January 2012.
It brings the overall total over the holidays to 47 deaths, with 45 in traffic accidents and two for alcohol poisoning.
The COE says that this year's death toll was considerably lower than last year's when 74 died, as reported in Diario Libre.
