Fernandez names the year

As is usual, each year the President issues a decree naming the year ahead with a theme. There have been years of "Education", and years of "Fight against Drugs," "Transparency" and this year President Fernandez issued a decree proclaiming 2012 as the "Year of Strengthening the Social and Democratic State of Law." Decree 768-11, released to the public only yesterday, stressed the fact that the Dominican Republic is governed by a Constitution considered to be progressive and the result of a broad consensus of all sectors of national life, according to El Nuevo Diario. In one of the five main points in the decree, the President says that "democracy has been one of the greatest objectives of the Dominican people's social struggles in the country's recent history."
