The Dr. Heriberto Pieter Oncological Hospital, under construction on the grounds of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) is about 90% finished, according to Luis Sifres, the director of the Office of Supervising Engineers of State Projects, the agency in charge of the building. However, there is some disagreement on the question of who will direct and administer the hospital that will allow broader services including new technology of the latest generation of cancer treatment. At first, it was thought that the hospital would be given to the trust that directs the current oncological hospital, and even the current and past directors were consulted on the design, in order to guarantee the specifications required by cancer patients.

The idea is not enjoying much support among the government authorities responsible for the project that do not like the idea of trusts or boards, because they prejudice patients who cannot pay, the poor and the indigent. A third option is the UASD, but some are opposing this idea, on the grounds that it does not have the required managerial capacity.

Faced with this situation, Sifres said that the government intends to create a sort of coordination between the UASD, the Ministry of Public Health and the trust that administers the current cancer center. The new hospital will cost between RD$4.5 and RD$5 billion and will be equipped for the latest in cancer treatment procedures, including Brachytherapy and the cyclotron use of radionuclides.
