Citizens of the Dominican Republic, Panama or Colombia, who possess Schengen visas to the European Union or tourist visas to either Canada or the United States, can enter Haiti without the need to obtain a visa. Haitian Minister of Foreign Affairs Laurent Lamothe said that the new measure would come into effect on 10 January. He said that this was an important step in allowing people to explore the Haitian market for investments and business opportunities. In the case of the Dominican Republic, this is an act of reciprocity since the Dominican Republic does not require a visa from Haitians who possess a valid United States visa. Haiti's Minister of Tourism, Stephanie Balmer Vildrouin, was quoted in Listin Diario as saying that this is an important step since it reduces considerably the cost of visiting Haiti and will allow for the creation of tourist packages to be developed between the DR and Haiti. This is the first judicial step by the Martelly administration to attract investors and tourists to Haiti since he took office last year.
