The new District Attorney for the National District, Yeni Berenice Reynoso, met with the former PRD senator Tonty Rutinel last night. Rutinel continued to refuse to sign the bail contracts that would release him as his case is heard.
Following the meeting, Rutinel was taken to Najayo jail to wait for his definitive sentencing in the case. In a full page advertisement published in the press over the holidays, Rutinel had maintained his innocence, saying that the injury only required three stitches, was unfortunate and that he apologized.
Rutinel is accused of hitting and injuring the mother of his two-year old child, but has refused to leave the prison cell at the Palacio de Justicia where he was awaiting trial despite having been granted a bail bond of RD$10 million, subject to travel restrictions and periodic appearances at the prosecutor's office. The Third Chamber of the Appeals Court turned down Rutinel's appeal.
