Claiming lack of evidence demonstrating that the charges against six members of the armed forces, including a lieutenant colonel, would stand up in a trial, the Collegiate Court of the Judicial District of Puerto Plata discharged the case. The prosecutors had charged the six with trying to send 29 packages of cocaine to Canada through the Gregorio Luperon International Airport. The 29 "bricks" of cocaine, weighing 33 kilos, were found in the cargo space of flight 3017 of Thomas Cook airlines and would have been shipped to Toronto, Canada. The court also discharged the accusations against two civilians who worked for the Swissport air services company that services the Thomas Cook flights. So far, according to El Nuevo Diario, the sentence has not been appealed.
