On Monday, the Emergency Operations Center (COE) said that the death toll over the Christmas and New Year's holidays was 47, of whom 45 were in traffic accidents and two resulted from alcohol poisoning. A total of 1,048 people were affected in some way: 776 in traffic accidents, 182 by alcohol poisoning and 43 by food poisoning.

The 47 fatalities represent a 36% reduction compared to 2010 when 74 died, but the total number affected, 1,048, is greater than the previous year when the number was 775. One troubling piece of information came out of the COE press release: of those affected by alcohol poisoning, 24 were minors between the ages of one and 17! As a result, COE commander General Juan Manuel Mendez Garcia told reporters from Hoy that he would be sending a list of these children to the Prosecutor for Boys, Girls and Adolescents so that judicial charges can be filed against the parents. A report from AMET commander, General Jose Anibal Sanz Jiminian, reveals that while there was a 34% reduction in motorcycle deaths, at least 90% of the fatalities were people who were not wearing helmets at the time of the accident.
