Last night the Dominican Winter Baseball League Championship entered the fifth game of the 18-game round-robin portion of the tournament with the Leones del Escogido on top, followed by the Aguilas, the Gigantes del Cibao and the Tigres del Licey.
In last night's action the Gigantes won their first game by a score of 9-1 over the Tigres del Licey. The bats of Alexi Casilla (5-3), Jimmy Paredes (5-2), Pedro Feliz (5-3) and Diory Hernandez (4-2) produced the nine runs needed to seal the victory. Edison Volquez and six other pitchers held the Tigres to just four hits and one run.
In the other game last night, the Leones del Escogido tore up the Aguilas Cibaenas in their home field by a score of 8-3. The Leones unleashed a 15-hit attack with Julio Borbon, Pablo Ozuna, Mauro Gomez and Wilkin Castillo all getting multiple hits. The game was tied until the fourth inning when the Leones scored three runs and the Aguilas could only add one more run in the seventh. Not that they were not batting. They were. Elian Herrera, Pedro Ciriaco, Hector Luna, Audy Ciriaco and Juan Perez all had multiple hits, but the six pitchers used by the Leones, starting with Aneury Rodriguez, managed to get good defensive and squeezed out of the tight situations. Manager Felix Fermin used his star Lorenzo Barcelo, but he only lasted 3.1 innings and was followed by seven more pitchers who could not stem the Leones' attack.
A piece of curiosity: The Aguilas infield was composed of two pairs of brothers. At shortstop and third base were the Ciriaco brothers, Pedro and Audy. At second base and on first were the Luna brothers, Omar and Hector. This is a first in the long, long history of Dominican baseball. The only comparable situation was when Escogido used to field an outfield of Felipe, Moises and Jesus Rojas Alou.
Standings: <b>Team <b>Win-Loss <b>Average <b>Games behind LEONES 4 - 0 1.000 -- AGUILAS 3 - 2 .600 1.5 GIGANTES 1 - 3 .250 3.0 TIGRES 1 - 4 .200 3.5 Tonight the Tigres del Licey will play the Leones del Escogido in Santo Domingo. The game will start at 7:35pm.
