Avenues, green areas and barrios are taken over by taxi drivers, bus drivers, and vendors, while the city governments just stand by and take no action. Diario Libre editorializes and reports on how public spaces and roadways are affected by the chaotic informal economy. The newspaper mentions the case of Avenida Jose Marti, from the fruit vendors who have taken over Jose de Jesus Ravelo street, and that of another improvised market at Paseo de los Reyes Catolicos, or Km 9 of Duarte Highway taken over by shared taxis, and roast pig vendors, or areas around the state UASD university, taken over by informal vendors, and Marcos Ruiz street, where informal mechanic shops have taken over the street. In an editorial today, the newspaper calls for city residents to demand true city government for all citizens. "We need the city governments to awaken from their deep sleep," writes the newspaper.
