The Dominican Republic has the dubious honor of the highest rate of burn injuries in the world. Listin Diario reports that on average 30,000 people are victims of burns every year and that 3,000 of them, about 10%, require hospitalization. On average 290 are hospitalized at the Peral F. Ort Burn Center at the Luis Eduardo Aybar public hospital. The unit treats around 3,500 outpatients. 50% of those treated at the center are victims of injuries resulting from flames caused by kerosene gas, propane, gasoline or fuel oil, and 35% for electricity-related injuries, followed by China with 11%.

Moreover, the DR is second in the world in injuries caused by burns in the kitchen. He stressed the importance of prevention, of not cooking while carrying children, and not allowing them to be alone in the kitchen.

Another major reason for burns is the location of the propane gas tank. He said for instance, Johnny Cake vendors keep the tank next to the stove with children around. He said that in the home, a cylinder should be kept at least three to five meters away from the stove, which is violated frequently in the DR. He recommends that the tank should be kept outdoors, but in many cases this is not done because of the risk of theft.

Listin Diario reports that the Dominican Republic is the only country in the world reporting injuries for electricity theft. Another 10 to 15% of the injuries are due to accidents at home.

Enrique Jose Jimenez Then, director of a new burn unit at the Ney Arias Lora Traumatology Hospital in the Province of Santo Domingo made the announcement. He said that the DR is the country with the most severe burns, with patients having on average of 48% body burns, while in the US and Europe the average per patient is 30% body burns.
