People are always saying that not much money is circulating on the streets. But as of November 2011, more than RD$500 billion moved in the market via electronic transfers, although in a smaller number of transactions and values than in 2010.

However the amount and the number of electronic transfers made in 2011 seems to justify public complaints. As of November 2011, 28.9 million electronic transactions were made using debit and credit cards, ATMs, and point of sales, for a value of RD$501.1 billion. Nevertheless, in 2010, the number of electronic transfers of funds presented in the Chamber of Compensation (Clearinghouse), which is the guarantor agency of financial transactions, was 29.8 million for a value of RD$515.7, according to figures published on the Central Bank webpage.

The number of transactions fell by 2.9%in 2011 in relation to the year before, some 865,219 in total, while the amount involved fell by 2.7%, which represents RD$13.6 million in absolute numbers. 2.4 million debit and credit cards transactions were made for a value of RD$466.3 billion as of last November. Likewise, the total number of transactions in ATMs climbed to 12.2 million as of November, with a value of RD$18.3 billion, which is to say 738,905 fewer transactions but the amount moved was RD$952 million more. In the meantime, point of sales use of electronic transfers totaled 14.3 million for a value of RD$17.5 billion. In 2010 the number of transactions at sales points was 14.5 million, and the amount was RD$17.3 billion, some RD$172 million less than in 2011.
