The director of the Professor Juan Bosch Trauma Hospital in La Vega has announced the opening of a new area this month, with additional capacity for 16 patients at the same time. The hospital mainly treats emergency cases. Since its inauguration in 2005, it has treated 197,430 people, of whom 32,640 were admitted through the emergency room, and 30% were traffic accident victims, as reported in Diario Libre.

Dr. Ramon Alvarado said the expanded capacity would include a new computerized tridimensional angio-tomography for patients with suspected serious heart problems, the first to be installed in the Cibao region.

Dr. Alvarado says that the hospital has served its purpose and has saved hundreds of people who have suffered accidents when driving along the Duarte highway that connects the north and south of the Dominican Republic. He mentioned that 67% of the patients treated in the emergency room were motorcycle riders involved in traffic accidents, and that their statistics show that only 3% were wearing their protective helmets at the time of the accident.

The hospital has a staff of 98 nurses, 4 paramedics and 105 physicians, of whom 38 are traumatologists.
