The Department of Taxes (DGII) told the press yesterday that it is investigating the individuals who purchased the watches that had been confiscated from Puerto Rican drug capo Jose David Figueroa Agosto to establish the origin of the funds used to purchase the luxury items at the auction held last week, as reported in El Dia. A source told the newspaper that none of the people who purchased the luxury watches were registered taxpayers with the DGII.

The DGII said it would notify the buyers to request their income declaration and the payment of income tax for non-declared income.

Local press reports focused on the young men and women who shelled out RD$23.6 million to purchase 21 Audemars Piguet watches, four Roger Dubuis watches, one Hublot Geneve watch and another Rolex Oyster Deepsea watch. Special mention was given to 27 year old Miladys Aybar, a member of the defense team for Eddy Brito who was convicted of money laundering in the case of Jose David Figueroa Agosto, dubbed 'the Pablo Escobar of the Caribbean' by US Marshals prior to his capture, and 'one of the major drug traffickers in history.' The lead buyer was 28-year old Luis Pou, of Inversiones Yang, SRL, who purchased eight watches for RD$10,373,375, including the most expensive, an Audemars Piguet 25977OR for RD$3,295,687. Others were Marcos Enmanuel Ferrando Aybar, who purchased 11 watches for RD$9,507,312, Miladys Aybar with four watches for RD$1,910,375, Adonis Charalambous with 3 watches for RD$1,565,500 and Jocelle Sharine Heise Pou who bought one for US$275,125, as reported.
