The Senate has passed a bill that authorizes the Ministry of Hacienda to issue bonds for RD$1.440 million to be used for a rice-pledging scheme. The bill modifies Art. 4 of Law 353-11 that allocated RD$5 billion for the farming sector, of which RD$1 billion were assigned to the rice sector. A yield of 5 to 10% is established for the bonds.
On Tuesday, PRD presidential candidate Hipolito Mejia had said on TV that the Dominican farm sector was going through difficult times, and specifically mentioned the case of rice growers.
